Joyce Smith Interview
Joyce Smith is among Canada’s earliest female country stars. She began performing as a teenager in Edmonton, appearing on CHED radio’s Jubilee Jamboree and as a frequent guest on TV programs such as the Chuckwagon Show and the Noon Show. Smith later joined the Rodgers Brothers Band and toured throughout Western Canada, opening for many of Nashville’s top acts, including Hank Snow and Wilf Carter. In 1962 she was invited to record with legendary Nashville producer Owen Bradley, resulting in the international hit song "Leavin’ On Your Mind". Later recorded by Patsy Cline, Smith’s version sold over 100,000 copies in the US and earned her a CCMA nomination for "Most Promising Female Vocalist". Joyce Smith has released six albums and was inducted into the Alberta Country Music Hall of Fame in 1991 and the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 2010.
